Neymar is now a recognized legend in Brazilian record books.

The star forward’s goal against Bolivia in 2026 World Cup qualification action on Friday made him the top male scorer in Brazilian history.

With Brazil leading 3-0, Neymar took advantage of a deflection from teammate Rodrygo to score a goal past goalie Guillermo Viscarra in the 61st minute.

Neymar now has 78 goals for Brazil, breaking Pele’s record of 77 goals set in 1971. Pele’s record was within 92 caps of being surpassed by Neymar in his 125th appearance.

It didn’t take him long to break the previous record, either. Neymar connected with a cross from Raphinha from the right side in the third minute of extra time in the second half that Viscarra was powerless to save. Brazil eventually prevailed 5-1.

Only two male players have scored more than 70 goals: Neymar and Pele. Ronaldo, who scored 62 goals in 98 appearances from 1994 to 2011, is the next-best scorer.

Marta has 115 goals to her name, making her the all-time leading scorer for both the men’s and women’s teams of Brazil.

The 31-year-old Neymar, who is now playing for Al Hilal in Saudi Arabia, will try to keep increasing his total as the 2026 World Cup cycle progresses.
