Currently, Erling Haaland is among the most well-known players in football due to his consistent goal scoring over multiple seasons. The striker just made a multi-million pound transfer from Borussia Dortmund to Manchester City, but it seems that in his free time, he prefers to wear Coventry City’s true Sky Blue.
Is one of the hottest properties in football a secret Cov fan? That is the issue raised by a recent snapshot Haaland published to his Instagram stories wearing the club’s home jersey from the 2020–21 season.
Recently turning 22, Haaland posted birthday wishes from his friends to his Instagram stories. Jude Bellingham and Jack Grealish were among the teammates who had left messages for him in the past and present. One of them was from a buddy who posted a picture of the two of them vacationing with Haaland wearing the city shirt.
Haaland, a native of Leeds, is unlikely to support the Cov for any geographical reason. His father, Alf-Inge Haaland, played for Leeds United in the Premier League when he was born in 2000. If Haaland Jnr had an English team, Leeds, Manchester City, or Nottingham Forest, all of which Haaland Snr represented, would be the most likely candidates.
Another possibility is that the 22-year-old supported some of the former Coventry City players who also share his nationality. This is an improbable explanation because Trond Egil Soltvedt, who played 57 times for the Sky Blues in the 1990s, departed the team before Haaland was born.
In contrast, Runar Normann only appeared in a few games for Cov while Haaland was still alive and while the striker would have still been in diapers. So also unlikely.es
Leo “stigrd,” a recent Norwegian defender for Coventry who is on loan, offers a far more plausible argument. Haaland and Stigrd, who are both 22 years old, have played together for Norway and even shared time playing for Molde during the 2017–18 season.
The fact that Stigrd, who is currently with Napoli, played for the Sky Blues during the 2020–21 campaign—the same campaign that the uniform Haaland was spotted wearing—adds credence to this claim. By deduction, Dear Watson, we may conclude that stigrd most certainly made a nice gesture by giving his fellow countryman a match-used shirt during his time with Coventry.
Either that, or Haaland visited the Tesco Arena club store to purchase a city shirt. Or perhaps he bought it from an online end-of-season sale?
Maybe, just maybe, he really is a Sky Blue in disguise. In terms of famous Cov fans, it’d be a little better than Richard Keys from Corrie or Brian McFadden from Westlife.
A request for a statement has been sent to Coventry City. Additionally, Erling Haaland has been contacted.
