Xabi Alonso has agreed to join Liverpool next summer after signing a contract with Bayer Leverkusen.
Since taking over at Leverkusen this time last year, Alonso has done an outstanding job. After seven games of the Bundesliga season, his club leads the table with six victories and a draw.
Because of his outstanding start to his coaching career, there has been much conjecture that he could be in line for the top position at Liverpool or Real Madrid. And, according to Sport BILD through Get German Football News, this may become a reality.
They report that the German club has already agreed with Alonso that he can leave if one of his former clubs approaches him in the coming year.
In addition to covering offers from Liverpool and Real Madrid, the 41-year-old is said to be permitted to depart without a fight if Bayern Munich comes calling.
Alonso has a contract with Liverpool
Obviously, unless something goes horribly wrong, Liverpool will not be doing this with Leverkusen next summer.
Unfortunately, it appears that Alonso will be making his way to Madrid instead.
With Carlo Ancelotti ready to depart the Spanish giants at the conclusion of the season, they will be looking for a new manager. Even if he wasn’t an ex-player, Alonso appears to be an excellent contender to replace the Italian.
The World Cup winner has done an outstanding job at Leverkusen. Why would Madrid not want a piece of that?
They may face competition from Bayern, who may opt to take a chance on Xabi if he beats them to the Bundesliga title.
However, Liverpool will gladly wait to see what Alonso’s status is if and when they need to recruit a replacement for Jurgen Klopp.
A move to Real Madrid or perhaps Bayern Munich may make that difficult in 2026. But who knows what the future will bring. The one thing that is evident from all of this is that Xabi will not be deterred if Liverpool comes calling.
