The reigning World Cup champions won three out of three in qualification, so they didn’t need their hero.
In the end, Lionel Messi did make an appearance, coming on as a substitute off the bench. However, it turned out that Argentina didn’t really need him to handle Paraguay in the World Cup qualifying match that took place at the Estadio Monumental on Thursday.
Argentina’s goal came from an unexpected source as they won 1-0 and were led by another well-known player. That improbable origin? Three minutes in, Nicolas Otamendi, the defender, scored a wonderful volley. Conversely, Argentina never turned back.
Paraguay never really had a sniff of the game because to the outstanding efforts of the midfield trio of Rodrigo de Paul, Enzo Fernandez, and Alexis Mac Allister. It seemed like the game was headed in one direction by the time Messi entered the game early in the second half to replace an otherwise outstanding Julian Alvarez.
Despite seeming far from his best, Messi missed the post twice, but Argentina would not let it get to them as they advanced through the CONMEBOL qualifying round with three straight victories.
Regarding Messi, Rodrigo De Paul said, “We always want to have him on the field, and we always miss him.” Being able to turn around and give him a pass and a chance makes me happy. He offers us a great deal of comfort. Everything is better with him, so I hope he returns for the next game.
Leo Messi: “Hola? In the changing area, they informed me that I had been spat on. To be honest, I have no idea who the boy is. I would rather remain silent because if I do, he would go out and make himself known everywhere he talks.
Lionel Messi: (Score: 6)
Despite not looking well, he managed to score an Olimpico and a free kick off the post because, well, that’s just him. Thought this game probably didn’t need to be risked.
