Erik ten Hag is reportedly ‘willing’ to remove Andre Onana from his Manchester United starting lineup, but believes the goalkeeper’s’strong character’ will see him shine at Old Trafford.

Onana has taken over as Manchester United’s No. 1 goalkeeper this season, but he has had a rocky start, with a number of high-profile blunders leading fans and analysts to doubt his status in the club.

According to ESPN, Ten Hag chose to sign the 27-year-old from Inter Milan for £47 million owing to a ‘personality’ that separated him from the other alternatives on their shortlist, which included David Raya and Diogo Costa.

Despite his difficult start, Onana has remained a “vocal member of the dressing room alongside Bruno Fernandes and Casemiro,” according to the club.

However, there is an acknowledgment that improvements can and should be made, with his error against Bayern Munich being a source of concern, not because of the error itself, but because of ‘how long it took him to get over it’.

‘Coaches noted that he wasn’t back clapping and shouting advice from behind the defense until the start of the second half, more than 30 minutes after the mistake.’

One component of the game on which United is working with Onana is his capacity to recover mentally from mistakes, as well as two technical aspects.
