Several stars, including club captain Fernandes, were mentioned in the post-match conversation on Sky Sports.
Former Liverpool midfielder Jamie Carragher praised Erik ten Hag for naming the 29-year-old captain.
He said: “Bruno Fernandes should be not be a captain, we’re sat with two [former] Manchester United captains (Keane and Gary Neville).”
Keane, 52, then offered his own analysis on the matter.
The football hardman said: “After today and having watched him again I would definitely take the captaincy off him. 100 per cent.
“I know it’s a big decision, obviously he changed the captaincy with [Harry] Maguire, but Fernandes is not captain material.”
Keane continued: “I think he’s a talented player no doubt about it.
“But what I saw from him today; his whinging, his moaning, he’s throwing his arms up in the air constantly, it really isn’t acceptable.
“And what we saw today, I would take it off him.
“Cause we’re talking about making changes, you have to start somewhere whether it’s board level, managers, I would start with that because the manager is capable of doing that and holding his hands up and saying ‘listen I got it wrong’.
“In terms of captain material, he’s the opposite to what I would want in a captain.”
Fernandes was named the Red Devils captain in the summer while Maguire was demoted ahead of his expected transfer departure.
Fernandes was far from his best against City
Because of City’s dominance, he found it tough to enter the game.Fans chastised Keane for asking Rasmus Hojlund to go down for a penalty when he had a fantastic chance to score but was knocked off balance by a nice nudge by John Stones. It came after United had conceded a “soft” penalty, with Hojlund fouling Rodri for having his arm wrapped around his waist at a free-kick.United’s stars lost their heads toward the end of the game, with Gary Neville calling Antony “ridiculous.”After Jack Grealish escaped without penalty for a shove on Sofyan Amrabat, online supporters were outraged at referee Paul Tierney. In front of a raucous Old Trafford crowd, Erling Haaland scored twice and assisted Phil Foden.Despite the defeat, Manchester United remains eighth in the Premier League table, while City moves to within two points of league leaders Tottenham and even with Arsenal.
Ten Hag’s side face Newcastle in the League Cup in midweek in a repeat of last season’s competition final.
They then head to Fulham on next Saturday for their next league game.
