Liverpool emerged victorious with a 2-1 away win against Bournemouth in the fourth round of the League Cup, securing their place in the quarter-finals of the competition. Manager Jürgen Klopp opted for a relatively strong lineup, including the likes of Mohamed Salah, who saw the Carabao Cup as an opportunity for some rest in recent years.
Despite the poor weather conditions in southern England, the Reds showcased their class on the pitch. They clearly outperformed their opponents and created scoring opportunities with ease. In the 31st minute, Liverpool took the lead through a close-range strike from Cody Gakpo, and the score remained unchanged for the rest of the first half.
In the 64th minute, a ball from a corner caused cоnfusiоn for Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher. The Irishman failed to clear the ball at the right moment, and it fell perfectly for Justin Kluivert, who headed it into the net from two meters. However, the hosts’ joy was short-lived. Six minutes later, Darwin Núñez showcased his brilliance with a phenomenal strike from the edge of the penalty area. The Uruguayan forward noticed the goalkeeper’s poor positioning and surprised him with an unannounced shot into the top corner. Núñez’s goal cooled the hosts’ momentum and sealed their elimination from the League Cup, while Liverpool secured their spot in the quarter-finals.
