France captain Kylian Mbappe had to miss the loss to Germany in Dortmund this morning due to a patellar tendon injury. He was not even named in coach Didier Deschamps’s last-minute reserve list.
“Kylian had problems from the previous training session. He injured the patellar tendon in his knee. Although it’s not serious, it makes Kylian uncomfortable”, on TV station TF1, coach Deschamps shared about Mbappe’s condition after France lost 1-2 to Germany.
This is also the first time Germany has won against France after 6 previous consecutive matches without knowing the joy of victory (4 defeats, 2 draws). And, this is also the first time since the start of the EURO 2024 qualifiers that Mbappe has been absent from a match of the French national team.
Mbappe also came out to warm up at the beginning of the match. However, at that moment, experts realized that the French super striker had a problem. “Look, Kylian Mbappe warms up very uncomfortable. He walks a bit limply and doesn’t run as hot as usual. Obviously, a small foot problem from a few weeks ago has caused his knee to feel uncomfortable,” TF1 journalist Saber Desfarges commented when Mbappe appeared on the Signal Iduna Park field during warm-up.
That’s why coach Deschamps decided to remove Mbappe from the squad in the match against Germany. “Kylian cannot play with a patellar tendon problem. There are too many unnecessary risks if we let him continue playing. I don’t want Kyky’s situation to get worse. Similar is the case of Dayot (Upamecano). He has a hamstring problem. Therefore, there is no need to take additional risks in a friendly match,” coach Deschamps emphasized.
Previously, the French team was unable to have Olivier Giroud when the Milan striker was injured at the beginning of the match against the Republic of Ireland.
