Mason Greenwood Makes Getafe Debut After 20-Month Absence on Loan from Manchester United

In the 77th minute of the match, manager José Bordalás made a substitution, bringing on Greenwood to replace forward Juanmi Latasa, which was met with a generally positive response from the Getafe fans. However, the turnout for the match was not particularly impressive, with only 9,000 fans present in the 16,000-capacity Estadio Coliseum Alfonso Perez, whereas the average attendance is around 12,000.

According to journalist Guillermo Rai from The Athletic, some Osasuna fans appeared to jeer Greenwood and chanted offensive remarks such as “Greenwood die”. This incident occurred as Greenwood made his first appearance in 20 months, with his last game being for Manchester United against West Ham in January 2022.

Greenwood had faced a period of suspension by United after being arrested on suspicion of rape, controlling and coercive behavior, and assault occasioning actual bodily harm. However, in February of this year, the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) dropped all criminal charges against Greenwood due to the withdrawal of key witnesses and the emergence of new material.

United conducted an internal investigation into the matter, which concluded in August. The club determined that Greenwood would not continue playing for them.
