David de Gea departed Manchester United in July after Erik ten Hag chose to part ways with the Spanish goalkeeper in favor of signing Andre Onana for £47M.
David de Gea returned to Manchester United’s support on Tuesday, when he was photographed watching their women’s team.
The Spanish goalkeeper, who has been without a club since being released by Manchester United in July, was present at Tuesday’s 1-1 draw with Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League second round. After PSG took an early second-half lead, new signing Melvine Malard equalized in the first leg.
Fans at Leigh Sports Village were treated to a close-fought match while seeing De Gea, 32, who returned to Manchester this week after a three-month absence. After 12 years at Old Trafford, the four-time player of the season was nearing the end of his £375,000-a-week contract but had agreed to extend his stay by signing a new deal on lower terms.
United then withdrew their initial offer and engaged into another round of negotiations, this time without reaching an agreement. Manager Erik ten Hag decided to recruit new No.1 goalkeeper Andre Onana for £47 million from Inter Milan, but his decision is being heavily questioned.
Onana’s disastrous start at Old Trafford has seen him surrender 19 goals in just 11 outings, several of which he may be held responsible for. Ten Hag supports the Cameroon international, with whom he previously worked at Ajax, but some say the Red Devils boss made the wrong decision by letting De Gea leave, despite the fact that the 32-year-old remains a free agent after rejecting offers from Saudi Arabia.
Ten Hag, who frequently claimed that he wanted to keep De Gea, is yet to go into detail about the decision. During pre-season, the Dutch boss underlined De Gea’s legacy by telling MUTV: “It’s massive what David has done for us and for Manchester United.
“Last season he contributed so highly on our top-four position, to winning the trophy in the Carabao Cup and to reaching the final of the FA Cup. So, we are really grateful for what he did for us, and we highly respect him.”
De Gea has appeared in more United games than any other goalkeeper in the club’s 145-year history. “545 games, that’s huge,” Ten Hag added. “He had so many clean sheets because of his skills, and he has done so much for Manchester United, and we all respect him.”
